Tastes of Trivandrum: Kallaikada with Malabar Taste buds

The name ‘Kallai’ reminds us of Malabar and its old capital city Kozhikode that flourishes on both sides of this famous river. Kallai was once world famous for its timber industry, and even now, one can see timber mills on the banks of Kallai River. When they decided to open a new restaurant serving specialty Malabar food, the owners of ‘Kallaikada’ decided to give a suitable name, synonymous with erstwhile Malabar. The new restaurant was thus named ‘Kallaikada’.

Hotel management specialists Jojo Raveendran and Vinod Kumar S P, who have more than 15 years of experience in the hospitality industry, are the founders of  ‘Kallaikada’. The restaurant, inaugurated by actor Biju Menon on May 12, functions on the ground floor of ‘Magic Days Inn’ at Vanross Junction. For anyone who wants to taste Malabar food, ‘Kallaikada’ is the right choice.

The speciality of this restaurant is Majboos, otherwise known as Arabian Biriyani, with an added flavor of spices served along with chutney made of Kanthari Chilli. It’s a party in your mouth! Tasty Malabar Fish Curry Meals and Ghee Rice are available for lunch with optional side dishes like Malabari Chicken Curry, Fish Mulakitathu, Chicken Olathu, and so on. Vegetarian meal is also available.

For Dinner, they have a different menu, serving Malabar Pathiri and Appam with Mutton Stew, Vegetable Stew, Malabari Chicken Curry, and many more. ‘Kallaikada’ serves only Malabari food and the usual items like Dosas and Chappatis are not available. Tharavu roast, Fish Pollichathu, Unnaka, Barbeque Chicken, and Romali Rotti will also be added to the menu in the coming days.

The clean, well furnished, and properly lit restaurant with its walls adorned with framed posters of old Malayalam movies, provides the right ambience for those who come to relish Malabari food. The old Malayalam hit songs played in the restaurant give an added touch.

The main attraction of ‘Kalliakada’ is the Malabari food at affordable prices. And don’t forget to have a helping of delicious Majboos. Highly Recommended!
