The North Malabar town of Thalassery is famous, not
only for its nice and friendly people, but also for its delectable food. Many
of the leading bakeries all over Kerala are
owned by people from Thalassery. It was in this town, where cakes were baked
for the first time in Kerala, for the
Europeans. Now, ‘Ajwa’ has brought the taste of real Thalassery Dum Biriyani to
the Capital city of Kerala, at
affordable prices.
‘Ajwa’ dates are high quality dates from Saudi Arabia. The signature dish of ‘Ajwa’ is Dum Biriyani served with ‘Ajwa’ dates pickle. The lingering taste of this combination is unique and superb. So when they started a new restaurant at Trivandrum, the owners decided to name it ‘Ajwa’.
“It all started
with a Biriyani Mela conducted at Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium, where the
highlight was Dum Biriyani. The response from the public was excellent. Then we
thought about opening a small outlet for serving parcels and we opened a
counter at Udaarasiromani Road. From there, we moved into the present spacious
restaurant near Panavila Junction,” said the Managing partner
of the restaurant, Naushad, when asked about what had prompted them to open a
speciality restaurant in the city.
Fish, Chicken, or Mutton mixed with masala is scooped with Biriyani made of a special variety of Biriyani rice. This superior quality rice is brought from Kannur. Biriyani thus prepared is served in pots along with sweet and sour dates pickle, and a simple cucumber salad. The menu contains Mutton, Chicken, Fish, and Vegetarian Biriyanis, Chicken fry and lime tea.
The spacious well furnished dining hall is neat and clean, and is an ideal place for families to dine in. There is sufficient space for vehicle parking also. The restaurant is open from 11 am to 9 pm. On Sundays and other holidays, the number of visitors are much more than that of working days. There is a special counter for delivering parcels. ‘Ajwa’ also undertakes outdoor catering for weddings and events.
A cup of special lime tea after Biriyani is a fine experience. So do not forget to order for it, when you are dining at Ajwa.
