FASHION FRENZY IN CAMPUS

When we hear the term fashion, stylish clothes, shoes, bags, and other accessories come to our mind. Fashion creates a great impact on one’s personality. One looks awkward if he/she wears an outdated dress. A couple of years back, bell bottoms were the most preferred. But now they have gone out of fashion. Now, if a student wears bell bottom trousers, he/she will be an ‘odd man out’.

Campuses are turning more fashionable now a days. There was a time    when schools and even colleges implemented strict dress code for students. Uniforms were compulsory. But now, only few colleges are insisting on students wearing uniform dresses. In those colleges where uniform is not a ‘must’, students come wearing trendy dresses. Here is a study on the changing scenario.

Casuals are the most preferred attire in the campus. The trend among the students is to go for simple and comfortable dresses. T-shirts with logos and phrases are a rage among boys. The Tees go very well with all kinds of jeans. Some wear hooded sweat shirts over Tees to give an added look without much bulk. Still, shirts are most commonly used by the boys. Casual shirts rule over formals. According to Mayuf of Orio Men’s Wear, “Most of them go for lesser priced and branded looking shirts within the range of 500-600.” Small checks and folded up sleeves are very common.

Comfort jeans are fast replacing the slim fit ones. Low waist trousers are the latest trends which gives an ultra cool look. Coloured trousers are available in pencil fit and balloon fit styles. Slowly these are getting into preference list of boys. “Though we go for funky stuffs, we try to keep it simple. Traditional Kerala style shirt and ‘mundu’ are worn on special occasions like onam, Kerala piravi etc”, says Ananthu of Barton Hill Engineering College.

Converse shoes are still popular among the youth because it goes with any kind of attire. Flip flops and sandals are also used by them. Shortly cut spiked up hairdo adds up to the latest style.

Among girls, smart casual outfits are more popular. They go for trendy tops and T-shirts which gives bold look to their appearance. Shrugs worn over T-shirts are now worn over kurtas which make a good combination with jeans. A cotton shirt over a tee is a favourite that goes well with the denims. Ethnic look is still most favoured in colleges. Cotton kurtas are worn with jeans which gives a traditional look.

Slim fit jeans are the most popular in the market. Pencil fit jeans and shirts give a touch of the casual college look. Candy jeans which are costly are also in move but preference is more for lesser priced jeans.

Churidhar is always the most preferred dress in colleges. Cotton churidhars without much work on tops and bottoms with a heavy dupatta make a good combination. A long fancy chain adds to the elegant look. “I prefer simple and comfortable dresses which are also stylish and trendy. We try out different styles in churidhar by having loose pajamas, churi pajamas or dhoti styles.”, says Megha Mohan of LBS Engineering college. In foot wears, heels are out and flats are in. Desi shoes and flats go with kurtas. A sneaker or a sandal is mostly preferred with jeans.

Wooden bangles and chunky thread bangles are favourite among girls. Most girls go for small earrings to keep the look simple and trendy.

While on fashion, both boys and girls try to follow leading film stars to some extent. Today’s youth always try to give a personal touch to whatever they wear and experiment new styles of their own. The fashion trends in Trivandrum campuses keep changing at a fast pace like metros and other major cities.
